Walmart Is About To Start Selling Cars
By Summer Nowak
Walmart (the nations largest retailer) is starting to sell cars through a partnership with CarSaver (an online automotive retail platform). CarSaver is setting up partnerships with dealership groups, including AutoNation (which is the U.S’s largest new-vehicle retailer).
CarSaver will start the program on April 1st at select Walmart’s in Houston, Dallas, Phoenix and Oklahoma City.
CarSaver’s digital platforms allows car shoppers to select, finance as well as insure a vehicle directly through the website or touch screen kiosk. Staffers at CarSaver Centers will explain the car-buying program to Walmart customers.
Customers will be able to select a new, used or pre-owned vehicle and apply for both financing and auto insurance at the kiosk. They can also apply on their mobile device via CarSaver’s website or by calling an 800 number.
After applying, CarSaver will then connect customers with a local, certified dealer and schedule a time to visit the dealership. If a shopper doesn’t contact the dealership then an auto adviser will reconnect with the shopper.
Once a sale is made, the dealership that sold the car will pay CarSaver a ‘success fee’ of $350 in most states.
The dealerships CarSaver providers are all within 15 miles of a Walmart supercenter because they want to make it as convenient as possible for customers. This also gives dealerships the opportunity to grow the service part of their business.
CarSaver, Walmart and participating dealerships conducted a trial version of the program in Florida and more than half of the appointments scheduled through the program led to a sale; while on average, customers saved more than $3000 off the sticker price of the vehicle.
Costco’s similar program sells on average more than 1000 vehicles a year per Costco store, and Walmart is aiming for the same. If the initial launch is successful then CarSaver hopes to be in Walmart supercenters nationwide within just two years and will match customers with 10,000 certified dealership partners.
